Home Updates Without Breaking the Bank

As I look around my home, I can always find lots of things that need updating. And my brain instantly goes to “it’s going to cost too much to do any of this stuff and my husband is going to say no to the extra expense.” Well I’m going to share with you some things you can do around your house that I have found that can spruce up your space and that won’t break the bank!

  1. Paint - There is nothing that a fresh coat of paint can’t solve! When choosing a paint color, it’s best to pick a neutral color. By selecting a neutral color, you can slash future expenses by just buying color accent pillows and decor to add a pop of color to a space. Pillows and decor are much easier and less expensive to change out than new paint!

  2. Larger Space - If you want to make a space appear larger, you can hang curtain rods close the ceiling to create the illusion that the room is bigger than what it is by creating higher ceilings.

  3. Furniture - When buying new pieces of furniture for your home, it is best to purchase neutral colors. Beige, white, ivory, tan, gray…all of these colors are neutral and will save you money in the long run. You can just change out colored and patterned pillows which are much cheaper than changing out furniture!

  4. Hardware and Fixtures - Cabinet hardware, faucets and light fixtures, are one of the best things you can do to update an area. For example, by just updating old out of date bathroom fixtures, you can bring a fresh new look and update the area quickly! These are both pretty low cost and and easy to do yourself!

  5. Accent Wall - You can create an access wall in a few different ways to update and change the look of a room. You can do wall paper. I especially like peel n stick wallpaper, because it’s not messy, easy to use and is very forgiving if you make a mistake. Another thing you can do is get 1/4” molding and can create dimension on a wall with the pattern and texture to make a WOW piece that your eye is drawn to in a room!

  6. Front Door - Paint your front door! This is something that will be a low cost update and make any tired entryway come to life! Repainting a front door also increases curb appeal if you are wanting to make a great first impression while selling your home!

  7. Plants - Add fresh plants and flowers to outdoor planters to add a bit of style and elevate the look to the area.

  8. Contrast - Paint your kitchen island a different color from the kitchen cabinets! This will add contrast to the area and put some color into the area!

  9. Interior Doors - Change out interior doors throughout the house. Maybe switch out your bathroom door in the master to a sliding barn door. Or frosted window glass door to your pantry. I am not saying all of them, but placing a couple different doors throughout the house adds character to the home! The possibilities are endless!

  10. Countertops - If your cabinets are still good and you want to give a room a fresh look, try changing out the kitchen countertops! Choosing a neutral stone such as white, cream, gray or tan will be cost beneficial in the long run because it will easily be able to be coordinated with in the future. This is a great way to update a room and not spend too much time or money in the process!

These are just a few things that are low budget and fairly easy things you can do to refresh a space and give it a whole new vibe!
